Three Countries, One Mother is a multilingual solo performance by Gum-Dip Theatre (GDT) inspired by the true story of Lead Artist Neema Bal’s family and community. The play explores the history and culture of the Bhutanese-Nepali-American people, and the diverse spectrum of spirituality within the Tamang tribe--Buddhism and indigenous shamanism. The narrative takes place across three different countries–Bhutan, Nepal, and the United States -- because of the Bhutanese refugee crisis and third country resettlement throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. By splitting the story of the play among three countries, the narrative of each place represents a different outcome of the Bhutanese Refugee Crisis that is linked by one family in the face of displacement.
